2017-2018: What Did I Learn?

[A 500 word Critical and Reflective Evaluation of what you have learned regarding your personal and professional development this year, and how you plan to build on it next year.]

This academic year has been highly eye opening and full of creativity. From university films, to historical musical pre-production, I have been involved in all sorts of projects, and I intend to continue this pattern through the rest of the year, both in and out of my academic life.

Before the start of the academic year, I had not properly explored exactly what pre-production entails. I now know that it isn't always as practical filmmaking based as you might think. Whilst this is where the ideas are formulated, changed and edited into something possible, it is also financing, location scouting, shot lists, casting and so much more, all under the general umbrella of 'pre-production'.
I spent a vast amount of time writing, conversing and educating. Working with non-filmmakers on multiple occasions was extremely insightful, providing me with only a taster of what my later career will likely contain. I found myself exiting my comfort zone - selling ideas to History students, explaining the meaning of narrative to Composers, even working on helping a student open up a website about battling sexual abuse. I have been working from all ends of the spectrum, and I have loved learning about how different industries can all tie together through the power of media.

I have learned about my strengths in places I didn't know I had them. I have learned to enjoy aspects of pre-production. This has included writing, be it ideas, mind maps or scripts. I have also felt passionate about educating others about the field of filmmaking. Conversing with those who have no experience in our world to me is exciting; it's refreshing, and they can bring entirely new ideas to the table from their field.

I've also learned of my weaknesses, which I'd definitely like to improve on. Often, my organisation is compromised. Never being a Producer before, I find myself struggling to give reasonable timetables to all involved. One example of this is where I felt that writing one song for the Horrible Histories Musical would take longer than it actually did. Perhaps I need to reconsider my time frames, and I feel this will come with experience and practice in viewing how long these activities take the more I am involved with them.

In hindsight of everything I have accomplished professionally this year, I am very happy with how I am coming along. Whilst, as mentioned above, I have a few weaknesses, some which I knew I had and others that I didn't, I've also learned that I really do have some strengths. Learning to talk to those who aren't in my industry has been such a practical experience, one that I know will serve me well in the future, both in and out of filmmaking.
Over my final academic year, I hope to continue this upward journey. Perhaps it will include a larger production or more regular smaller productions, where I can get to be part of a smaller team. Regardless, I am very happy with this year, and it has left me keen to put myself out there and get involved in real life productions in the future.
